I’m looking for a good durable motorcycle, and not anything like a Kawasaki ninja or anything like that something like chopper or something, I’m wanting one because they are cheap and most are good on gas. dad says I should get a Harley but I don’t know if those are any good, I liked the one he had last which was a Honda shadow aero, but he sold it instead of giving it to me, all well it had an oil filter problem, for some reason everytime we put a new oil filter on it would leak and get into the air filter some how, anyways, what should I get I’m a big guy but not too big like 5-10′ and 245 lbs
I meant to make the title good american made OR foreign motorcycles
the Gold Wing was the only foreign ASSEMBLED bike on American soil. There are nothing wrong with Harleys either. They are a bike that requires more attention than the metric counterparts as far as maintaining service intervals, but it’ll last you a looooong time if taken care of. They are not the leaking bikes they once were and what you may not know and haven’t been told is that the old Harleys were designed to leak. engine oil trickled onto the primary chain but still sported a dry clutch. Later there was a return but put contaminated oil into engine. Anyway. Honda has a newer bike out called the Fury, chopper looking and should be mostly maintainence free execpt for fluid changes due to shaft drive and hydraulic lifters. pretty sharp looking . As for your father’s old bike, sounds like it was overfilled with engine oil. That will cause it to push oil into the air box, but it’s gone now. shop around, sit on them and get a feel for the control layout. Even some bike cc bikes are small in stature. Test ride them if you can. My personal opinion – I’m a Harley man, but if i weren’t on a Harley, I’d be on a Honda. Clean lines, good ergonomics, run good, and ease of maintainence.

Ok were not gonna be an outlaw club or a 1% club. Were just a group of motorcycle enthusaist that want to ride together. I want to know would the name disciples of anarchy be to close to sons of anarchy or would it be alright to use. I already looked it up and nobody is using it. we ride american motorcycles and thats all.
Disciples already roam your neck of the woods. Unless your ready for whatever, I STRONGLY suggest you take a name that links you to no 1%’s out there.
If all you allow is American bikes, as a Vet, I salute you, but I would look to our founding fathers for inspiration.
How about, "The Thomas Paine Affair"?
Die Hard Patriots would get it.

The U.S. has Harley Davidson and Victory who basically make expensive cruisers and a bunch of custom chopper makers. Buell is the only attempt that the U.S. makes a sportbike which doesn’t come close to the amount of Japanese and European competition.
There isn’t even an American dirtbike company. There is really no beginner 250cc American motorcycle. The HD Sportster 883 is as close to a beginner bike as it gets.
So why can’t America be more competitive with making motorcycles of all kinds like they do with cars?
Is it that there is little business interest here in the U.S. or are they just not that smart to engineer their own bikes here other than heavy cruisers? Are they too afraid to copy Japanese models of motorcycles and sell them at a similar price? Even if they did, at least they would be American made and America would have more American motorcycles for buyers to choose from.
Yep, our American Unions which supposed to save American jobs prevent so many American companies from opening because of high demand in salary. They can pretty much shut their Union mouths when we buy Japanese and Chinese products…huh?
The U.S. is a huge country with a lot of open road. Big countries with wide open spaces call for big bikes. If we were the size of Japan we would make Jap size bikes. Somebody has to be top dog and we (like it or not) are it. We make big, fast, long lasting bikes. It fits our country. Kinda like why do Eskimos drive sled dogs. You wanna cover some ground get a Harley. Same reason we build big cars. Big trucks. Big buildings. Big jock straps. Big Space shuttles. Big H – bombs. We are big compared to them. Top Dog. The reason Japan even has an industrial base is because after WWII we gave them our expertise, free loans etc. and we built their factories for them so they would become what they are today. We wanted them to be what we have now made them. That was our right and it’s what we did. You gotta remember, they surrendered unconditionally. We could have put them all on a reservation in the Sahara desert and homesteaded Japan if we wanted to. We paid for that right with blood. You have the right to ride a Harley – paid with blood

If you have motorcycled around Europe give me some pointers. Thinking about Switzerland and maybe France or Italy.
Both of these answers are GREAT! Thanks. I can’t choose the best one, so we will have to let the voters do it.
You don’t mention what you ride, but if you’re talking about Switzerland, France and northern Italy, you’re talking about some significant altitude changes.. talk to a skilled mechanic about your carburetor, and if you’re going to need to adjust for the lower O2 pressures at altitude, for instance. Also, plan your route, and your alternative routes (because something always goes wrong), well in advance, ensuring that you end each day in place where you can find a good meal and a warm bed (I’ve slept on the grass by the road– it gets old fast. Carry a small cooler on your bike and keep it stocked with bottled water, bread, cheese, sausage, etc.– sometimes, especially in the mountains, you may find yourself some distance from the next meal. Also, don’t plan to closely, or set yourself too rigid a time schedule. Allow time for bike repairs, dinners with families you meet, scenic routes that turn into goat trails, etc.
Get a mobile phone that will work in Europe (many American phones utilize different places on the bandwidth). You can also wait and buy a cheapie once you’re here, and thus avoid massive roaming fees. On a related issue, get some travelerĀ“s phrasebooks if you aren’t a speaker of French, German and Italian. More Europeans speak some English, unlike Americans who tend to be monolingual, but phrasebooks simplify life. See if you can find one with motorcycle terminology; if not, before you go, make up a list of useful phrases and get them translated in advance (what’s a valve-stem in German? But if you need one…).
Get good, up-to-date maps, and get them locally– the road that last year’s map shows may be gone now (and I’ve discovered that Google and Yahoo’s Maps are both behind the times.
Make sure that you have your US driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement and an International license (available from AAA), and thet it also shows your motorcycle endorsement– generally speaking, just your US license and passport aren’t sufficient in Europe. On the other hand, once you arrive in Europe, there are no customs inspections between European Union nations.
Good luck, and have fun!
