Not everyone has Discovery Turbo. The Discovery Channel is going to show whatever gets it good ratings, and there are a lot of people interested in how cars and bikes work. Dirty Jobs is a funny show that also gives information on things a lot of people don’t even think about on a daily basis. While it may be second nature to blue collar workers like myself, this country is getting more and more white collar and to many of the people I know they have really never been exposed to this kind of thing. They keep tuning in, which increases the ratings and makes the commercial time more valuable. Discovery Channel notices that they are making more of a profit off these shows than a show about the universe that a lot of these masters and PhD holders have already taken in college and they make more of them, causing their target audience to tune in more and make Discovery one of their favorite surfing stops, which again increases the ratings and the value of the commercial time, and the cycle goes on – capitalism and free market at its best.

they are more interested in making tv than the job they set out to do in the first place, and surprise surprise every project runs over !?

they aren’t informative at all and in my opinion would be better placed on another channel.

having said that they are sometimes entertaining, but in no way informative, it’s also annoying with the massive banners all over the workshops for tool suppliers etc, but they obviously bring in a good advertising revenue so they won’t be dissapearing anytime soon.

a much better (informative and entertainment wise) show is the series of shows with Mark Evans presenting, including "a racing car is born" "a 4X4 is born" "a plane is born" etc.

on the other hand if you’re interested in actually learning anything don’t bother with "Chop shop" – London garage or "The Garage"
